Breaking down the creative decisions

The cabinetry: one hero colour, one supporting colour

Rather than making every cupboard the same shade, we split the cabinetry into a primary and a secondary colour, Laminex Eucalypt (Colour Code 2604) as the hero on the main run of cabinetry, and Laminex Calm Oak (Colour Code 1036) on the island and open shelving. This is a trick professional designers lean on constantly: it stops a kitchen from feeling flat, and it means the island naturally draws the eye as a feature rather than blending into the rest of the room.

The benchtop and splashback: durability that still looks like marble

We chose a porcelain benchtop and splashback (506 Mirabel from Caesarstone) instead of natural stone. It gives that soft, veined marble look everyone loves in photos, but without the staining and sealing headaches that come with actual marble, a genuinely practical call for a busy family kitchen, not just a pretty one.

The secondary splashback uses a small square matte tile in white (Haddon White Matte from Tilecloud), which adds texture without competing with the statement benchtop.

Lighting: layered, not just functional

One of the biggest giveaways of a professionally designed space is layered lighting, and this kitchen uses three distinct light sources doing three different jobs. A black pendant with green marble and bronze detailing sits above the island as the statement piece. Gunmetal spotlights handle the practical, everyday task lighting. And a brushed brass wall bracket adds a warm, ambient glow to an otherwise empty wall, the kind of detail that makes a kitchen feel finished rather than just fitted out.

Hardware and tapware: one finish, used consistently

Every piece of hardware in this kitchen — the tapware, the sink, the cabinetry pulls, sticks to the same brushed brass finish. That consistency is what makes a kitchen read as intentional rather than assembled piece by piece. It's a simple rule, but it's the single easiest thing to get wrong when you're sourcing fixtures on your own.
